Each of these topics are discussed in greater detail under their own sections on this web site. In this section on General Dentistry, we will focus on the simple restorative aspect of dentistry.
Everything in life has a “life expectancy” and so do dental fillings/restorations. The longevity varies greatly among dental patients. Those patients who have impeccable home care (brushing and flossing)…don’t clench and grind… eat few sugars … etc. are more “likely” to have restorations last “longer”. The question may arise… how long is longer? The answer is we really don’t know. Our best “guesstimate” is between 7-10 years with some fillings lasting 20 years or more. As a general “rule” (with exceptions) a smaller dental filling lasts longer that a larger filling. Dental Decay or recurrent dental cavities determines the size of the filling placed in your tooth.
When amalgam restorations (silver + mercury) were popular, the filling had to be made in order to mechanically lock the filling in place (usually larger). With the advent and popularization of composite (white) restorations and bonding… dentists need to remove “only” the decayed tooth structure and can “bond” the dental filling material to the tooth (minimally invasive). Most dental restorations work very well when there is enough tooth structure to bond to. When less tooth structure is available or you have forceful occlusion (forceful bite) you may need to investigate placing a dental crown on the tooth.
