Difficult tooth whitening

Denver Dentist Dental CrownDifficult tooth colors to whiten – Highlands Ranch dentist, Denver Dentist

From all the ads we see… we get the illusion that whitening can be accomplished on every dental patient easily. While a majority of patients find whitening quick and easy there are patients who are refractory to whitening where the results are difficult.  Certain colors are disappointing for both the patient and the office.  Highlands Ranch dentist Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp provide cosmetic dentistry to their dental patients in Denver, Lone Tree, Castle Pines, Ken Caryl, and in Parker Colorado.

Types of colors that whiten poorly include but are not limited to:

  • Tetracycline staining (browns and grays)
  • Heavy fluorosis (opaque white and brown stains)
  • Heavy mineral deposits (orange and brown colors etc.)
  • Gray tints
  • Brown tints
  • Gray/ brown tints

The above colors will whiten to varying degrees and rarely look like the models you see in magazines. We can generally lighten “most” difficult cases by combining whitening techniques. How much we can whiten we don’t know until we try. Typically, we need to condition the enamel with the whitening solution.  That “may” be best accomplished by one-hour whitening programs like Luma whitening.  Next… we would follow up with custom tray whitening.  This is accomplished by our Highlands Ranch dentist taking moulds of your teeth and fabricating plaster models. Over the plastic models a plastic form is vacuum-formed over the model to get an intimate seal.  It is then trimmed and fitted to your mouth.  Various types of whitening gels in different strengths can then be placed inside this tray and worn for around an hour with some trays being worn longer.

Sensitivity in teeth whitening, Highland Ranch Dentist, Denver dentistry

Potential sensitivity has… and always will be…. the number one chief complaint from patients.  We have found this to be transitory and simply laying of a day or two reduces the discomfort.  If your teeth were sensitive prior to bleaching they most likely will “still” be sensitive after and maybe even more so!  Sensitivity in a critical issue in whitening and may disqualify you from being a candidate for dental whitening.

Alternative to teeth whitening, Highlands Ranch dentist, Denver Dentistry

The two most common alternatives to whitening are … no treatment… or some type of dental veneer/crown to mask the color. Severe discoloration even poses challenges for dental veneers and crowns for our Highlands Ranch and Denver cosmetic dentists.

Dental whitening is a successful and enjoyable procedure for most dental patients and dental offices. Like in life, there are exceptions to every rule. Tough colors are just plain tough.  Results can and will vary. You might consider a no-charge initial consultation to determine how complex your case will be.  While not perfect… it can give us an idea on how to approach your case.  Highlands Ranch cosmetic dentists Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp provide cosmetic dentistry including teeth whitening to their patients.  Our dental patients come from Denver, Parker, Castle Pines, Lone Tree, and Parker Colorado. We can be reached at (303) 694-9740
