Hospital Dentistry

Denver Dentist Dental CrownFor extreme dental phobia or medically compromised dental patients... hospital dentistry may be the resort of choice. Highlands Ranch Dentists  Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. Candace DeLapp provide hospital dentistry for our Colorado dental patients in the Lone Tree, Parker, Centennial, and in the greater Denver area. Hospital based dentistry provides for a select few a way to fulfill their dental needs that cannot be met with procedures in the dental office.

General anesthesia whether it is for heart transplant or dental procedures carries the "same" anesthetic risks. While unintended outcomes are uncommon, care needs to be taken to make the prognosis as favorable as possible.

As a general rule of thumb, Highlands Ranch Dentists Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. Candace DeLapp have made every attempt to complete your dental treatment in the traditional dental setting... the dental office. Frequently we have "tried" to use IV sedation and this has been proven to be ineffective.

Typically in order to be a candidate for hospital dentistry, you need to have clearance for the dental work "and" the anesthesia from your primary care physician. In many cases it requires blood work, a preoperative ECG and other tests deemed necessary by your physician. Once cleared medically, we can look at how we need to approach your want/needs.

Certain procedures like dental crowns and bridges require multiple visits and a decision needs to be made if a second general anesthesia session is needed to facilitate their placement. Other visits in the office may need to be done without the benefit of any anesthesia like adjusting the bite. Occlusion or bite adjustment is difficult to impossible to refine in the anesthetized patient.

Informed consent reviewing the risks and limitations of dental treatment will be reviewed with each dental patient so they are armed with this information (so they make an informed decision). You may or may not wish to proceed with care. If after careful consideration you wish to proceed with care, we need to schedule your treatment with the health care facility. Most patients can have these types of procedures done on an outpatient basis in day surgery. However, all dental patients should be aware that "sometimes' you may require a hospital overnight stay or more. Unfortunately, there is not way to predict this "complication" with any certainty ahead of time. This can substantially affect the overall cost of the hospital visit.

Fees

There is a wide range of dental fees and medical fees that are charged to you from various sources that you should be aware of. Only fees associated with our dental treatment is under our control and even these can increase especially if treatment become more complex at the time of its delivery. It should be recognized that all fees quoted would be a good faith estimate. Fees most likely may be generated from the following:

  • Your primary care physician
  • The anesthesiologist who performs the anesthesiology
  • Surgical nurses required to be in the operating room
  • Day surgical center
  • If needed to be admitted past 24 hours... the hospital
  • Our Dental fees
  • There can be other fees too numerous to mention. We make every attempt to let you know what they are.

We want you to understand that there are certain elements we have no control over and want you to be as informed as possible and understand the treatment and financial risks. It is in everyone's best interest to investigate as thoroughly all financial and treatment risks associated with these procedures. Most of the time both medical and dental insurance covers "some" of the procedure but you should recognize that on rare occasion "no" (or partial) coverage is seen and part or the entire financial burden is placed on the Dental Patient.

This type of procedure should be investigated carefully before embarking on this course. If you would like to discuss your hospital dentistry needs with Highlands Ranch Dentist's Dr. James DeLapp or Dr. Candace DeLapp please fee free to contact our office at (303) 694-9740
