General or Family Dentistry is the primary focus of our Highlands Ranch Dental patients.  The most common treatment provided is restorative dentistry, which most patients know as dental fillings.

Below is a photograph of a replacement of two silver fillings.  In this case... there was a cavity (decay) under both fillings.  Removal of this decay made the dental fillings (in this case) a "little" larger.  If the decay becomes extensive, then a dental crown or possible a root canal and dental crown may be necessary

Silver dental  fillings (silver + mercury) like everything else has a life expectancy or general service life. Typically, it is from 7-10 years but on occasion these silver fillings can last 30 years or more.

What determines the life expectancy of asilver dental filling (or any dental restoration) is:

  • How large the dental filling was
  • Was the dental filling placed in a moisture free environment?
  • What is the diet of the dental patient?
  • How much clenching and grinding of the teeth did the dental patient do?
  • What is the pH of the mouth (relative acidity of the dental patients mouth)?
  • Did the dental patient brush and floss effectively?
  • What type of dental bacteria populate the dental patients mouth (S.mutans e.g.)
  • Other factors
