Computer Axial Tomography (CAT scans) that is used in medicine and dentistry provide an invaluable service to humanity. Dr. Mathew R. Lark provides a great review of Cone Beam Technology in the August 2008 Dental Economics. In the 1970’s, British engineer Godfrey Hounsfield of EMI Laboratories and physicist Alan Cormack of Tufts University did initial research on CAT scan technology. The connection of CAT scans with the Beatles comes their record company EMI. In the early 1970’s the research division of EMI started some of the initial research on CAT scans. When we think of EMI …we think of rock and roll and records but EMI like so many companies does so many different things. By being able to take virtual “slices” thru your bone, as an example, we are able to determine the 3d architecture of your bone. We can locate the position and extent of your maxillary sinus as well as the inferior alveolar nerve as an example. These two structures are critical in determining implant placement. While this technology does not eliminate potential difficulties with dental implants… it can reduce the associated the risks.
