Procedures that are like to cause bleeding on occasion can cause bacteria to enter your bloodstream. While unlikely, it is possible that these bacteria could work their way to the heart or newly place artificial joints This presents a risk for some people with cardiac abnormalities because the bacteria may adhere an grown on the heart defect or joint causing bacterial endocarditis. Dr's DeLapp want you to be aware of this problems and take antibiotics pre-medication if necessary. Dentist Highlands Ranch
Certain heart conditions are associated more often with endocarditis. The following are some of those cardiac conditions and include but are not limited to:
- Heart surgery within the past six months
- Pacemaker
- Artificial heart valve
- Previous bacterial endocarditis
- History of heart murmur (mitral valve prolapse
- Congenital heart defect vascular surgery
- Some others (see your physician)
Procedures in which antibiotic coverage for dental procedures is recommended include:
- Extracting teeth
- Placement of Dental implants
- Gum surgery
- Root canal apical surgery
- Dental Injections into the root ligament
- Dental cleaning with curettage
- Root planing or deep cleaning
Dental procedures in which antibiotic coverage is NOT needed include:
- Getting numb with local anesthetics but not including inter-ligament injections
- Placement of a rubber dam
- Fillings and Crowns
- Placement of "retraction" cords for crowns and bridges
- Routine root canals (within the canal of the tooth)
- Suture removal
- X-rays
- Baby teeth lost naturally
- Invisalign or orthodontic adjustments
- Partial dentures or "flipper" removal or fabrication
- Dental impressions
- Fluoride treatments
Artificial Joint need for dental pre-medication
While unlikely, is possible that the bacteria commonly found in the mouth may travel through the bloodstream and grow in your artificial joint. This increases your risk of contracting an infection on your joint. Dr. James DeLapp and Dr; H. Candace DeLapp, Highlands Ranch dentist want to work with your orthopedic surgeon to determine the need for antibiotic coverage prior to dental treatment.
If you have had a total joint replacement, antibiotic prophylaxis is recommended for the first two years. Your orthopedic surgeon will determine if you need to be covered after that time.
High-risk medical complications with joint replacement include but are not limited to:
- Diabetes
- Immuno-supression Omany different types!)
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Cancer
