Abfractions are the notches on your tooth just above your gums. There has been debate over the years as to the cause of these notches and these notches may in fact be from several causes. Causes and symptoms of abfractions (notches) "may" include but are not limited to:

Improper forces on the tooth/teeth- current habit.

Improper forces on the tooth/teeth-past history.

Misaligned tooth/teeth.

Clenching or grinding of teeth

Erosion of teeth (e.g. acid like material on teeth).

Abrasion of teeth (toothbrush abrasion e.g.).

May or may not be sensitive to cold air application e.g.

Combination of any of the above.

Over the years our Highlands Ranch dentist feel that when your bite is off one tooth may hit prematurely. In time.... this flexing back and forth.... can cause the enamel to separate from the dentin layer of the tooth forming this distinctive notch at the gum line.
